Northwest Hills: Jewel of Texas Hill Country

Northwest Hills, as its name suggests, lies in the hills to the northwest of Austin, Texas.  This residential neighborhood offers first-class schools and a beautiful natural setting.  Austin style is evident in these large limestone and brick homes, complete with immaculate lawns and mature trees.  The western part of Northwest Hills, known as Far West, offers the highest population density and the chance to see hang-gliders soaring through the skies over Murchison Middle School.  This well-planned community offers both retail and residential space and separates the two with buffer zones of green space.

Beautiful Homes

Many homes in Northwest Hills were built in the 1960’s, though new residential developments in the area offer larger custom-built homes with higher price tags.  Hardwood floors are a feature in many of the older homes, with elegant base and crown molding throughout.  Stone and marble floors add a touch of luxury, while granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances are welcome additions in the large, open-plan kitchens.  Exquisite landscaping is common throughout the community, and the best aspects of outdoor living showcase the gorgeous Texas hill country.  Swimming pools are nearly a standard feature in this sun-loving neighborhood.  Newer homes in the area include expansive European-style estates and feature green construction techniques, polished concrete floors, and elaborate outdoor rooms including waterfalls and custom water features.

The highly-acclaimed Austin Independent School District (ISD) serves the Northwest Hills community, offering a wide variety of academic and extra-curricular activities.  Community involvement allows the Austin ISD to provide unique learning opportunities and a quality education for its students.  Special programs for learning-disabled and gifted students ensure that every child reaches his or her full potential.

Excellent Central West Convenience

Far from being merely a sleepy residential community, Northwest Hills offers abundant shopping opportunities.  Apartment complexes dot the area around Far West Boulevard, providing residences for students at nearby University of Texas; this gives the community a vibrant, youthful sensibility.  The Arboretum offers an upscale shopping experience for local residents.  Inside the mall, Chico’s offers the newest trends in women’s fashions, while Coldwater Creek has something for everyone in the family.  The Gap and Express serve a wide range of age groups, and the Pottery Barn offers a variety of home furnishings, most in natural tones.  Other local shopping centers include the Northcross Mall, Barton Creek Mall, and only a bit further afield, the unique retail outlets of downtown Austin.  Closer to home, the H-E-B grocery is conveniently located and offers the usual assortment of goods and services.  Commuters will welcome the convenience of the local Starbucks coffeehouses positioned strategically along the major thoroughfares.

While the bright lights and nightlife of downtown Austin are only a short drive away, Northwest Hills residents can enjoy many entertainment options and activities in their own community as well.  The annual Fourth of July Parade attracts locals and tourists alike.  Mediterranean décor meets Provençal cuisine daily at Mirabelle, a neighborhood favorite and a world-class dining experience.  For family fun, Mangia Pizzeria offers Chicago-style stuffed pizza, bottled and draft beer; kids eat free on Mondays at this popular local hangout.  El Arroyo serves up margaritas and Mexican food in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Hill Country Views

The picturesque Texas Hill Country offers a variety of parks, hiking trails, and scenic getaways for nature lovers.  Perhaps the best feature of Northwest Hills is its location.  Austin’s beautiful western hill country offers majestic views and secluded woodlands to soothe away the stresses of the workweek.  Housing prices vary widely in this area based on location, size, and amenities; the average price hovers around $300,000, though some multimillion estates are available.
