Enclave. What does the word mean to you?
Luxury, privacy, seclusion from the crowds and bustle, and all the amenities of good living, certainly. But in Austin, the word also connotes a place that promotes peace and harmony as a way of life, and coexistence with the natural world is a large part of that. If this sounds appealing to you, and you’re looking for a special home in a special neighborhood, read on about a place called Parkstone.
Parkstone is a gated community in the West Lake Hills area, adjacent to The Woods at Westlake, with homes valued from $400,000 to $1 million and spacious living areas ranging from 3000 to 5000 square feet. It lies just off Loop 1 (Capital of Texas Highway) and abuts the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which runs nearly eight miles north and west of Zilker Park in downtown Austin.
But this community is about much more than these bare facts. Originally called Parkstone at The Wilderness, back in 1996 this small, new subdivision was the site of the Parade of Homes in conjunction with the City of Austin’s Green Builder Program, a showcase in which eight local custom home builders put their best foot forward to create environmentally friendly, energy-conserving housing. The builders employed features including landscaping with water-saving native plants and grasses, solar energy, composting, radiant barriers and other innovative cooling systems.
Just as over a decade ago, Parkstone’s setting was judged to be ideal for showing how people can live in harmony with their surroundings, this appreciation of natural beauty and environmental preservation informs the neighborhood to this day.
Parkstone’s homes are elegant, spacious dwellings with all the features you would expect in this price range – gourmet kitchens, granite or marble counters, kitchen islands, top-of-the-line appliances and high ceilings are just some of the desirable “standard extras” you’ll find as a matter of course. Some higher-end properties include such impressive luxuries as heated in-ground swimming pools with fountains and hot tubs. The interiors have room to spare – besides the basics, there’s enough space for a library, media room, game room or whatever suits your fancy. Landscaping is lush, with beautiful, mature native shade trees; many homes back up onto the greenbelt for added beauty and privacy.
As secluded as it feels, Parkstone’s location is ideal – both downtown Austin and major area employers to the north and west are no more than 15 minutes away, and Lake Travis is only a bit farther. The beautifully rugged Wild Basin Wilderness Park, one of Austin’s best hiking spots, is also practically in the neighborhood.
When it comes to nearby shopping, premier malls like the Arboretum and the Domain are also an easy drive away, and the Barton Square Mall is only a few minutes’ drive down 360.
Residents’ children attend schools in the acclaimed Eanes Independent School District, one of Austin’s finest, which has received awards for both academics and athletics. Schools include Forest Trail Elementary, West Ridge Middle School and Westlake High.
Living in Parkstone isn’t for everyone, but many discerning executives and professionals are finding out that it’s an ideal place for them – and maybe it’s your place, too.
