Austin has set a goal of receiving 30% of its energy from renewable resources by 2020. In a February 12 City Council meeting, officials are expected to hear a proposal for the largest solar photovoltaic power plant on Earth. The proposal will be about a $250 million contract with Gemini Solar Development, Inc. If approved, the plant may begin providing power as early as next year. The plant is expected to be built on about 350 acres of city-owned land near Webberville. Austin Energy would be the only client of the plant and would, under contract, purchase up to 30 megawatts of solar power over a 25 year period. This output would provide energy to about 5,000 homes each year.
Gemini Solar Development, Inc is a San Francisco-based company that has combined two well known companies in renewable technologies. Suntech is known for high quality manufacturing of modules at affordable costs. MMA Renewable Ventures offers an excellent track record of affordable renewable resource plants that are low risk and reliable. The combined company was created to help the nation reach its goals of renewable energy resources in a cost effective and timely manner. Helping Austin to reach its goal affordably is the purpose of building this plant on already city-owned land. There will be no purchase or leasing costs for Austin by building on this land. Austin has been a green living model for quite some time, and hopes to continue in the role. This solar plant will certainly help to keep this momentum growing.
